Beginner and/or Intermediate Animators:

About the Course

If you ever wanted to bring a drawing or character to the screen but didnt know how to start, this course is for you! What we'll be learning is how to streamline your designs to better work with animation, then some basics on general character animation. After we get the basics down we can dive into figuring out how your character moves and expresses themselves with a line of dialogue so that you'll be able to see how they look in motion, with whatever attitude you decide to give them! I look forward to meeting you, and all your creations!

The class will be on the basics of animation, not so much the tech/program side of things. I've worked in most programs and will be able to help you out, but the aim of the class is character animation and acting, not program tutorials. I'm purposefully gearing this class to be able to translate to as many animation programs as possible- if you know how to animate then you can go on to use those skills in any program you want!

This 4 part workshop runs over four weeks:

  • Tuesday June 4, 2024
  • Tuesday June 11, 2024
  • Tuesday June 18, 2024
  • Tuesday June 25, 2024

About the Instructor

Hi there! My name is Millie Terry and I'm an animator who works in Toronto in a whole bunch of different mediums! Since graduating from Sheridan with my degree in animation, I've worked across the country with a bunch of different studios and directors on a myriad of different projects, ranging from children's animation, to independent art films, music videos, feature films, adult animated comedies, and recently, stunt animation! I've also worked in almost every animation software man has created, in almost every way that these programs can stretch. Most of my work for the last few years has focused on action animation, which requires a deep understanding of basics, intent of the scene, posing and execution. Something people often forget, and what inspired my focus for this course, is that big animation without character intent or personality can only go so far, no matter how impressive the technical skill is. My absolute favorite thing in animation is to push the characters to emote and express their individuality through movement, and to make sure that everything they do is specific to who that character is, no matter how big the gesture or how small the dialogue. I look forward to meeting you and helping you to find your character's quirks and specificities!!

Required Materials

  • Basic drawing skills, with emphasis on being able to articulate poses and the bodies of your characters for the key frames of your animation- I'll help you figure out the most dynamic ways to exaggerate what you have but it would be best to have a solid starting point.

  • Your own character design, while I'll have a character I'll be teaching with that I'm happy to lend you for the class, it's always nice to have a portfolio piece with your own character at the end!

  • Laptop or tablet with Flash/adobe Animate, or Procreate Dreams.

Note: TAIS has a limited number of laptops to lend to participants. If you’d like to reserve one, please email tais.animation@gmail.com.
